Over the years, I have learned that magic is so much better when there is a story behind it. Anyone can perform a card trick or make something disappear, but when a magician draws you into a story, builds the suspense, and makes you part of the experience, that is when the real magic happens. That is exactly what Master Magician David Parr accomplishes with his signature show, The Time Traveler, at Chicago’s Magic Lounge.David Parr has a remarkable ability to bring the past to life, whether he is sharing stories from his own youth or taking us back to historical events and mysterious places, including the famous Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. His storytelling, combined with his skillful illusions, creates an experience that is entertaining, surprising, and occasionally leaves you wondering how on earth he did that!
What makes David’s performance especially enjoyable is his ability to combine solo magic with audience participation. He knows how to select just the right people to bring onstage, and the audience members who joined him this evening helped make the show even more entertaining. David has a gift for making you feel as though you are not simply watching a magic show but participating in a journey through time.
David Parr performs The Time Traveler on Wednesdays through December 12, so if you have been looking for a unique night out, this is one signature show you do not want to miss.
But here is a little advice: Arrive early!
Although the main show begins at 8 p.m., I recommend getting there before 7 p.m. That gives you time to order food and drinks while enjoying some close-up magic right at your table.
Cary and I tried the sliders, hummus platter, and flatbread. Everything was delicious, satisfying, and well-prepared. In fact, we got a little carried away with our ordering! The portions are generous, and most items are perfect for two people to share.
We also enjoyed three different table magicians throughout the evening. The last performer was particularly impressive, especially with her card tricks. She had us staring in disbelief. Even when she attempted to demonstrate how a trick worked, I still could not figure it out! There is something fascinating about watching a magician explain an illusion while somehow leaving you just as mystified as before.
It reminded me of an old expression: practice makes perfect. One seemingly simple trick involving plastic cups was absolutely amazing when we learned that the magician had spent an entire month perfecting it. That is the dedication behind great magic.
The Magic Lounge offers something for everyone, with ticket prices generally ranging from $39 to $49, depending on the show. Performances run throughout the week, typically at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., with Sunday shows at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Check the website for the current schedule and ticket prices.
Prefer a more casual experience? You can enjoy magic at the bar without purchasing a ticket to the main show, although a two-drink minimum applies.
The atmosphere is another highlight. The historical photographs, memorabilia, and books, some dating back more than 200 years, help create an authentic setting that feels like stepping into another era.
Located at 5050 N. Clark Street in Chicago, The Magic Lounge is a wonderful destination for a date night, an evening with friends, or anyone who appreciates the art of illusion. Street parking is available, with free parking after 6 p.m. where permitted.
Remember, this is a 21-and-older venue, although guests aged 16 and older may attend with an adult, subject to the venue’s policies.
With many Halloween shows already nearly sold out, I would not wait too long to make plans.
The Magic Lounge is more than a place to see tricks. It is a place to experience wonder, enjoy great food and drinks, and rediscover the excitement of not knowing how something is possible.
Come early, bring your curiosity, and prepare to be amazed!
