A Chicago original and international hit, Late Nite Catechism comes to the Theatre at the Center, for one performance only, Sunday, July 20. And to the Lyric Theatre in Blue Island for a Sunday, August 10. performance.
Both matinee performances start at 3 p.m.
Call it Loretta Young meets Carol Burnett and Whoopi Goldberg. Late Nite Catechism is part catechism class, part stand-up routine. The character of “Sister” was created by Vicki Quade & Maripat Donovan, and the comedy was written in 1993. It’s an interactive comedy, and now one of the longest-running shows in Chicago and U.S. theater history.
And, this year, Late Nite Catechism marks its 32nd anniversary, a milestone! Plus, we celebrate our new pope, thrilled that Pope Leo XIV was born in the same city as Late Nite Catechism.
Commenting on the new pope, Hugh Hewitt, a Fox News commentator, recently wrote, “Pope Leo knows the big stuff —he’s a canon lawyer after all— but also the small stuff of American Catholicism such as that altar boys in America usually got tipped at weddings, forgotten at funerals and that Stations of the Cross on Good Fridays are a big deal.”
Then he added, “If Chicago parochial schools were like those in Ohio, the classes were big, often 40 or more, but the sisters and their lay colleagues kept order. (Yes, they did, and not with much difficulty.) The stage play “Late Nite Catechism” nails those days and those schools, and if that “one sister” show puts on a run near you, it’s a better read on the new pope’s upbringing than anything in the American press.”
Long-running hits like Late Nite Catechism are a rarity.
The New York Times calls it, “hilarious, well-written and inspired.” Jeffrey Lyons from TV’s Sneak Previews calls Late Nite Catechism “something to savor and enjoy….one of the most intimate, rewarding shows in town.”
You, the audience member, are part of Sister’s class. She’ll take you back to the days of the Latin Mass, meatless Fridays, and remind you about that good old ruler across the knuckles!
Late Nite Catechism is an uproariously funny play. Throughout the course of the play, Sister rewards audience members for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other nifty prizes. Naughty students may well find themselves on stage sitting in a corner reflecting their actions. The play is a sharp satire, but never mean. It’s simply an evening of fun and laughter.
