“South Carolina comes to Chicago”

***** Back in my Yellow Page days ( for you youngsters, yellow pages was the old way of finding things, sort of a “google” on paper), I was asked to spend some time in South Carolina, working the area. I was unaware of the great BBQ and flavors of the area and also found that they were great for seafood as well. Being a Chicagoan, these were flavors to savor and now, thanks to the good people of Briny Swine, Chicago has the opportunity to rejoice and taste the southern comfort.

Briny Swine is located on Clark Street (2577 North), just south of Diversey and a few blocks north of Fullerton. It is a huge dining spot with plenty of seats, a great bar, live entertainment ( on certain evenings), a wonderful staff and even a pool table. Frank, Jane and I were there on a Tuesday night ( a lot of people were there for their Tuesday special of Oysters -$1 each on Tuesdays) and were they delicious. By the way- Jane had never tried oysters before, but tonight, while we waited for Frank ( Mr. always late), she tried them, and guess what? Jane has a new love!

The menu is filled with goodies, and since there were just the three of us, we only tried some of the items. For starters, the Jimmy Red Corn Bread ( with sorghum butter), a unique corn bread, quite flavorful and it did not fall apart. We also loved the Fried Green Tomatoes (chow chow, pimento cheese and bacon jam) “to die for! Another starter ( but on te menu as seafood); peel and eat South Carolina Shrimp (garlic chili butter, cocktail sauce and lemon) fresh and tasty and one Carolina Blue Crabcake served with  two sides ( smoked beets ( amazing) and tomato braised collards.

For our entrée, we selected a platter  of smoked meats that had chicken wings, chicken Brisket and some pulled pork. They also have St. Louis ribs and turkey available. They also have Grouper and Ora-King Salmon on the menu and we watched a number of their sandwiches being served. I know next visit I am doing the Lobster Roll and Jane said Shrimp roll looks perfect. They also serve a Briny Swine House Burger that looked amazing!

Our server, Jessie made sure we had clean plates as we moved the dinner along and suggested that we try a few of their SWEETS. We did the Chocolate Pecan Pie and the White Chocolate Banana Pudding- both were great and both plates were left “clean as a whistle”.

Briny Swine is a fun plave with lots of specials- Monday Night is Burger night, Tuesdays $1 oysters ( we saw a lot of those being loved), Wednesday whisky and wings, Thursday College Night ( looks like great fun for the yongens), Friday- Fish Friday and Saturday smoked Prime Rob).
