The 93rd Chicago Boat Show made a splash this year at its new venue, the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. This change of location proved to be a smart move, offering easy accessibility via the tollway or I-94 expressway and convenient all-day parking for just $15. The convention center’s spacious layout allowed the event to truly shine, accommodating the expansive displays and providing an enjoyable experience for visitors.
I attended the show on Thursday, a day later than opening due to prior commitments. From the moment I entered, I was greeted with a dazzling array of boats, ranging from sleek two-passenger jet skis to jaw-dropping luxury cabin cruisers priced at a staggering $6 million. The variety and quality of boats on display were nothing short of impressive. For me, the highlight was discovering a well-designed and reasonably priced boat at $39,000. This 2024 model featured a glass-enclosed section to shield against rain, a sun deck, a lower sleeping area complete with a bathroom, and a compact kitchen. It was love at first sight, showcasing the perfect balance of functionality and style.
Another standout at the show was the selection of high-performance engines. One engine in particular, a 900HP V12 standing six feet tall, left me amazed. While I’m still puzzled as to why someone might need that much power, it’s a testament to the variety and cutting-edge technology on display. Beyond just boats and engines, the show also catered to boating enthusiasts by offering information on rentals and prime locations to enjoy boating across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
The Chicago Boat Show wasn’t just about boats; it was an event for the entire family. A massive kids’ section featured two pools where children could paddle around in mini boats or enjoy bumper car-style fun on the water. Adults weren’t left out, either. The food and drink options were plentiful and reasonably priced, with tasty concessions and well-made adult beverages available. A unique beach-themed area added to the summer-in-winter atmosphere, offering light snacks, Caribbean music, and a relaxing space to enjoy a drink.
The show offered more than boating equipment for those looking to shop. I was drawn to the wide range of products, from therapeutic watches and socks to a red-light massager I decided to take home. The vendors ensured there was something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned boater or a curious first-timer.
Practical information was readily available, making the event easy to navigate. Tickets were affordable at $15 for adults at the door or $13 if purchased online. Children under 13 could attend for free, making it an excellent outing for families. The show’s operating hours accommodated various schedules, running from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, with a slightly earlier closing at 5 p.m. on Sunday
Overall, the Chicago Boat Show delivered an unforgettable experience that felt like a mini summer vacation in the middle of a Chicago winter. Whether you’re a boating enthusiast or simply looking for a fun outing, this event had something for everyone. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show—and perhaps, just maybe, I’ll see that dream boat again.
