*** Looking for something different? If you get a kick out of “Drag Shows” then you might want to get over to The Venus Cabaret Theater on Southport. This is the quaint cabaret next door to The Mercury Theater where they are bringing in some of the best of the best when it comes to Drag queens. They are calling the series, “The Big Gay Cabaret with Ginger May”. Earlier in the year, we did get to see Ginger grace the stage. Now it will be others who follow in Ginger’s footsteps.
Tonight, I was witness to one Miz Cracker, a New York City drag queen who is also a comedy writer, foodie and comedienne.
Miz Cracker has appeared in “RuPaul’s Drag Race/season 10 and has finished in the top three.
Tonight, she played to a nearly sold out house at The Venus and for the most part the audience truly loved the show.
I am not a “drag Show” usual, so I am not sure what I was supposed to expect. I did not expect a script to be onstage and to have our star keep referring to it. It made me uncomfortable. I also think that if you are going out to the play the crowd, it works best if you have a follow spot so that the entire audience can see where you are and what you are doing. It is not funny if we don’t see it!
If the Venus is going to continue doing these shows ( which makes sense if you can fill the house and sell drinks) it is time t invest in a follow spot and hire someone to work it. The effect will be worth the investment, for sure.
Mis Cracker will continue bringing laughs to audiences on Saturday, May 11th at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Mother’s Day at 5 p.m.
