The Auditorium Theatre in Chicago is featuring “Fiddler on the Roof”, featuring the music of Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein. This North American tour company of the Tony Award winning musical based on the Sholom Aleichem stories is the perfect holiday treat for the entire family. The singing and dancing fills you heart with joy and keeps your feet tapping to the wonderful score. The staging was very clever and interesting. as the chorus and dancers thread their way through the play with perfection. Favorite numbers are “Tradition”,” Match Maker-Match Maker”,” If I Were A Rich Man” &” Sunrise Sunset”.These are songs that stay in your heart and memory long after leaving the theater.
John Preece gives his over 1700th crowd pleasing performance as Tevye. He keeps the entire audience focused on what is happening to his family living in Tsarist Russia in 1905. Tevye, the local milkman, is coping with his wife of 25 years and their 5 daughters. He and the family are constantly confronted with the changes in his family and their Jewish religious traditions.Pamela Chabora gives a good performance as Golde the loving sharp-tongued wife and mother who is the glue that holds the family together. These were times of great changes in customs and family- much like we are facing today, in different, yet similar ways.
Brook Hills (Tzeitel), Chelsey LeBel ( Chava) & Sarah Sesler ( Hodel) as the three older daughters each stand out with loving performances and have great interaction with Tevya and their tradition breaking partners, Andrew Boza (Motel), Joshua Phan- Gruber ( Perchik) & Michael Schultz ( Fyedka). Barbie McGuire (Yente, The Match Maker) & David Springstead. SR ( Lazar Wolf, The Butcher) both gave engaging performances.
The beautiful Auditorium Theatre was filled with patrons of all ages. Some of them seeing the play for the first time and others after many times. Everyone had a great time.
